Traditional Industry Approach

Most traditional recruiters will tell you that they "work a desk." That's how they started and that's how they continue. Working a desk means they are a self contained unit within some specialization based on industry or profession such as accounting or sales. They'll also tell you that this is a tough business to break into.

From one point of view they are perfectly correct. But, it need not be as difficult for you as it was for them. Following the traditional "desk" approach requires one to be fully proficient in so many aspects of the job that it can take years to have any real success.

Many recruiting firms are small and underfunded. Consequently, newcomers to such firms are not provided access to the latest technologies and tools, they are poorly trained and the best management advice they recieve is "Make more calls!"

Traditionally, recruiting firms could offer you one type of position -- Search Consultant. That's what you started as and that's the position you retired in. The business is evolving. Companies like Diedre Moire have taken a big company approach to the recruiting business and we are excited that you'll get to read about it here in just a few more pages. First, let's get you more informed about the Industry's traditional approach to recruiter career development then we'll tell you how we are different.
