Nonprofit Advocacy Organization recently concluded a significant five-year strategic planning process which pushes the organization to focus its work on race equity, early learning and child care, juvenile justice, child welfare, long-term vision setting, and power building while requiring a bold new approach to policy work. The Unit Director, Policy and Advocacy role is critical to the success of the organization's new strategic direction and overall organizational advancement.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, and serving as an integral member of the senior management team, A Unit Director, Policy and Advocacy is responsible for leading the organization's public policy work in ONE of the following categories:
*** Early Learning
*** Positive Youth Development & Juvenile Justice
*** Child Welfare - Abuse & Neglect
*** Health
*** Economics
*** Social Networking Safety & Effects
*** Mental Health
*** Education
*** Racial Equity
*** Family Support
Within the Unit's category this position is responsible for:
*** Proactive development of creative policy solutions.
*** Building collaborative partnerships with organizations at the local, state, and national level.
*** Design and execution of strategies to protect and advance legislative and administrative priorities that meet the needs of children. Especially most harmed by the system today.

The Job:
*** Serves as the lead advisor and thought leader on all policy matters in Unit Category - including administrative, legislative, and sector developments.
*** Oversees team-wide efforts to build partnerships with local, state, and national organizations in service of developing and advancing shared policy goals.
*** Working in partnership with organization's leadership and others, oversee the development of new ways of engaging with, and supporting the policy work of, coalition partners at the local and state level.
*** Leads a collaborative process, substantively engaging key stakeholders and partners, to build a long-term policy vision for change that anchors race equity and justice and is rooted in community leadership and perspective.
*** Drives the development of frameworks, and related tools, to assess how shorter term policy objectives set the stage for longer-term policy goals.
*** Anticipates emerging policy issues of importance and position the organization to address those issues.
*** Ensures strong processes are in place to propel Units' policy and government affairs work and designs high-level strategies that advance Unit's policy goals.
*** Develops an overarching policy strategy that builds towards the long-term policy vision established with partners and other stakeholders.
*** Collaborates with other Units: to ensure organizational alignment; to integrate policy work across programs and initiatives in an effort to harness and deploy organization and its partner's influence; and to position all of the organization's policy issues more broadly.
*** Operates as central decision-maker on policy campaign work - shaping budgeting decisions, campaign priorities, agendas, and messaging.
*** Improves and enhances processes to ensure more consistent and comprehensive monitoring of policy developments and trends that impact Unit's mission.
*** Develops, expands, and maintains an influential position among policymakers, legislators, institutions, regulators, key opinion leaders, and related influencers.
*** Promotes Unit's advocacy efforts to advance legislative, regulatory, and administrative policy goals and to determine which policy levers are most important and impactful at any given time.
*** Serves as subject expert and external spokesperson for the Unit in the media, appear on panels and other speaking engagements. Serve as a point of engagement for funders and donors, in partnership with the development team.
*** Provides leadership, direction, and professional development to a team of highly skilled policy specialists.
*** Promotes a culture of impact and continuous learning that embeds the organization's values.
*** Participates in organization-wide budget management processes, programmatic work with financial stewardship and related processes.
Unit Directors report to the Chief Executive Officer. Unit Directors directly supervise policy team leaders and indirectly members of the organization's Human Support Resources Matrix team.
